License Code Activation Q&A
Overview
Linn Software employs a commercial license activation system to provide access to the software. The new system replaces the Registration Code licensing method that was in use until September 2008. The new system has many benefits including more flexible licensing and one-time activation, eliminating the need to re-register the software every month with a different registration code. A license code is assigned to each Linn Software client. Trouble Activating? Click Here.

What is a License Code?
A license code is an 18-digit number that you enter into the License Activation window in Investor/RT (Setup: Preferences: License Activation). The number remains in effect as long as you continue as a subscriber. The license code tells Investor/RT which product and features you have licensed at any point in time. ... back to top

How Do I Retrieve My License Code?

How Do I Activate the License Code?
Open the License Activation window (File-->License Activation). Enter or paste the License Code from your Linn Software account web page into the space provided. Click the Activate License button. Agree to the License Agreement and go through the remaining steps clicking Next. Review the resulting license status in the window and click "Finish". The text should read: "Status: Activated (...) in good standing. In parentheses after the word Activated you will see codes indicating the product/features you have licensed. For example, an Investor/RT Market Profile user will see "Acivated (MP)" or "Activated (MP PRO)". If you see "Activated()" this means Investor/RT standard edition, with no other special features. If you experience any difficulty activating a license code, or if the product/feature codes are not what you expect, refer to the Trouble Shooting section at the bottom of this document. ...back to top

How Do I Change My License to Add or Remove Features?

Follow the ensuing prompts to select the license configuration you want and click to submit the order. What Do I Have to Do to Change My License to a Different Data Feed?
Nothing. Once activated on a computer, an intra-day license conveys the right to use the software with any of the intra-data data feeds/sources that Investor/RT supports. There is no need to notify Linn Software if you decide to use a different data source. You may take advantage of free trials from other vendors if you wish to run the software with an alternate feed for evaluation purposes. To setup Investor/RT software for a different data source, use the File:Reconfigure command. The same license code is used regardless of which data feed source you utilize. Linn Software license codes are also platform independent. You may run Investor/RT on Mac OS X, Windows XP, Windows 7, or Windows Vista using the same License Code. ...back to top

Macintosh OS X users who run XP, 7, or Vista under Boot Camp or VMWare Fusion may install both the Windows and the Macintosh version of Investor/RT with the same license code. At this time, virtualization under Parallels Desktop for OS X is not supported.... back to top

How Do I Move the License from One Computer to Another?
A license code may be activated on only one machine at a time. If you wish to run Investor/RT software on more than one computer at different times, go to the License Activation window and click De-Activate License to release the license from the machine. Then use the same License Code to activate on a different computer. You can move a license code from a Windows XP machine to a Windows Vista/7 or to a Macintosh OS X machine or vice versa. The license is platform independent. If you move your license frequently from one machine to another, consider adding an additional license to your account, or you can use a variety of techniques in the software to automate the activation and deactivation of your license when you frequently share a license between two different machines. See Q&A #144 for details. ... back to top

When Would I Need an Additional License Code?
An additional license code is required if a user wishes to run Investor/RT software on more than one computer simultaneously. You may request an additional license by logging into your linnsoft.com account and clicking on the Add New License link. Each additional license will carry the same product/features as the primary license. The monthly license fee for an additional license is $20. Additional license codes are available to enable multiple computer usage by a single user; they may not be used to provide another person access to the software under the terms of our license agreement. ... back to top

What If My License Code is Destroyed?
If your computer is lost or stolen or if you reformat or replace your hard drive, or if your computer become unusable due to hardware malfunction, the activated license code on such a machine will remain locked to that machine; it cannot be activated on a different machine. Email support@linnsoft.com with an explanation of the circumstances. The license code can be reset to permit a new activation on a replacement/repaired computer. . back to top

What If I Cannot De-activate my License?
If your license code is activated on a machine that cannot access the Internet or is otherwise disabled due to hardware malfunction or is in for repairs, you will need an additional license code temporarily in order to activate your licensed software on a different machine. You can order an additional license at any time by logging into linnsoft.com with your email address and password. Click the Add Another License link. Additional licenses are required for those who wish to activate the software simultaneously on two machines. They also fill the need for a temporary license code while your primary license code remains activated for exceptional reasons like this. The $20/mo fee is prorated for the remaining portion of the current month and billing continues month to month until you notify Linn Software.

When internet service is restored or the activated computer is repaired, you can resume using your primary license code as you were before. You must first De-Activate the additional license code to release it back to Linn Software and email info@linnsoft.com to cease billing for the additional license.

What If I Forget to De-Activate my License?
If you forget to de-activate your license code on your computer at the office, for example, and then leave town with your laptop, the same scenario would apply. As long as the license remains activated on the office computer your recourse would be to acquire an additional license code temporarily as described above. If you have only one license code and plan to use it frequently on different machines in different locations, we recommend that you setup a keyboard shortcut, e.g. set F5 to “De-activate License”. You can press F5 any time and leave, knowing your license is deactivated. If you have the shortcut setup, you can use Setup: Schedules, on the office computer for example, to execute F5 (De-Activate) every day at 6 p.m. As long as you leave the program running and it has internet access, the license will be de-activated automatically each day at the designated time. Another technique would be to setup a Schedule with two steps (actions): (1) F5 -De-Activate License and (2) Quit. This schedule can be setup to run each day at a specific time, or you can run this schedule when you wish to quit so that de-activation is automated when quitting. Using these techniques will reduce the likelihood that you find your license accidentally left activated when you wish to activate on a different computer in another location.

Can I Run Multiple Instances of Investor/RT with One License Code?
Yes. You may run as many instances of Investor/RT as you wish on the same machine with one license code activated. Running multiple instances is easiest under Windows XP. Install the software multiple times into differently name folders inside the Program Files directory. You may then run each one by starting investrt.exe from the folder where it was installed. Each instance uses the same license code. Instances may run with the same or a different data source. For more information on running multiple instances on Windows Vista and Windows 7 click here. Multiple instances are not supported on the Macintosh platform except under Virtual Machine software such as Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. ...back to top

Can I Run Investor/RT on a Server?
No. The License System that Investor/RT uses does not permit the product to be activated on any server operating system. ...back to top

Can I Use a Remote Desktop Connection to run Investor/RT?
No. The License System that Investor/RT uses does not permit the product to be activated when the user running Investor/RT is using Windows Remote Access (Terminal Services). Some remote login systems, e.g. LogMeIn (www.logmein.com), can be used to run Investor/RT on a remote machine as long as the remote login software does not use Microsoft Terminal Services to make the connection to the remote machine. ...back to top

Is Internet Access Required to Activate a License?
Yes. Activation of a license requires that the computer be connected to the Internet. Once the license is activated, the software does not require daily access to the internet. However the software does check-in with linnsoft.com periodically, at the beginning of the month for example, to verify that the license is continuing in good standing. Updating a license as described above requires Internet access. Fulfillment of update requests is immediate. Daily check-in with linnsoft.com takes place thereafter until billing has been completed. When moving a license from one computer to another, both de-activation and activation require the machines to have access to the Internet. When connecting to your data service provider or initiating data downloading requests, Internet access is necessary by definition, thus Investor/RT periodically chooses these times to check-in with linnsoft.com using a background task that does not interfere in any way with the use of the software. ... back to top

Do I Have to Do Anything Special at the Beginning of Each Month?
No. As long as your subscription to Investor/RT software is ongoing, the license renews automatically at the beginning of each month. Billing occurs on the first day of each month. If there is a billing problem, the software will notify you automatically to contact Linn Software. Access to the software continues. If you receive such a notice, log into your linnsoft.com account and check the credit card setup there. You can easily update a card's expiration date or specify a different credit card for billing. Within 24 hours the License Activation window in Investor/RT should reflect “in good standing” once again. If you continue to see payment due in the status, please contact info@linnsoft.com for billing assistance. ...back to top

How Do I End My Subscription?

When the Revise Investor/RT License windows opens, check the box titled Please cancel license at the end of this month. Click the Submit button. Windows Vista / Windows 7 Troubleshooting
Vista UAC (User Access Control) restrictions can interfere with the installation of licensing system software. For this reason, users of Windows Vista/7 must Run Investor/RT As Administrator in order to activate the license the first time. Thereafter, running as administrator is not required.
To run as administrator, simply right-click on the Investor/RT icon and choose "Run As Administrator". (you can do this on your desktop icon, the icon in the Start-->Programs menu, or in Windows Explorer in the default location of
C:\Program Files\investrt\invesrt.exe
). Once activated, quit Investor/RT and start up again with normal user privileges.

If problems persist, quit Investor/RT and run the ControlActivation program. Here's how: right-click on the Start Menu and select Explore. Use Windows Explorer to view the contents of the investrt directory where Investor/RT software is installed, usually inside the Program Files directory. Right-click on the application named ControlActivation.exe and choose Run As Administrator to open it. Follow the on-screen prompts to activate your license code. Then start Investor/RT again. Verify that the license is activated properly by visiting the License Activation window. The status message there should read Activated. If not, email support@linnsoft.com and include the error message and/or error number issued by ControlActivation.   back to top

Macintosh OS X Troubleshooting
The Mac OS X installer disk image (.dmg) includes an OS X package installer named LicenseDaemonVb.pkg. Double-click on the package to install licensing components on your Macintosh. If you skip this step, you will receive an error code -151 later when attempting to activate your license. This installer must be run, but only once. When future updates to Investor/RT software are released it is unnecessary to repeat this installation step. After restarting, launch Investor/RT and activate your 18-digit license code in the manner described above. If you see a message reporting that you have 7 days left in your evaluation period, ignore the message, and go back to the License Activation window, re-enter the 18-digit License Code, if necessary, and press Activate License.

If problems persist, quit Investor/RT and run the License Manager application. Here's how: open the Applications folder where the InvestorRT application resides. Right-click (Ctrl-Click) on the InvestorRT icon and choose Show Package Contents. Open the Contents/Resources folder therein and launch the License Manager application. Follow the on-screen prompts to activate your license code. Then start Investor/RT again. Verify that the license is activated properly by visiting the License Activation window. The status message there should read Activated followed by the product/feature codes for your license.  back to top
