What's New in Version 4.1 (Including Revision 1)

The new features and miscellaneous enhancements outlined below were introduced in the 4.1 Version.

Product Enhancements for version 4.1:
Release Date: February 22, 2000

  1. Improved method for adding textual annotations to charts
A new tool button has been added to the chart toolbar. The icon is the letter "A" for annotation. Click the annotation tool button and the cursor changes to a pencil. Move the mouse to the spot in the chart where you wish to place a textual annotation. Click the mouse and a text entry box will appear. Type in the text and press return. The new Text tool creates an "Annotation" indicator. The annotation indicator has been a part of Investor/RT for a long time but adding annotations has never been this easy. Like the trend line drawing tool, the text tool is "turned off" when you complete the mouse click. Hold down the shift key when you click to add an annotation if you want the tool to remain selected for placing another annotation box.

Once you have placed an annotation in the chart window, if you want to revise the text then right + click (Mac users command + click) on the text. A dialog will appear showing the settings for the Annotation. Revise the text and/or any of the settings in the dialog. Note that the annotation indicator has been improved to allow the user to choose a marker to appear along with the textual commentary.

There are two types of chart annotations-those that are associated with a specific date/time and those that are time-independent. In the annotation settings there is a checkbox titled "Text is not date/time dependent". When this box is checked, the text is fixed in the window. You can drag and drop the annotation to another location, but the text does not move as you change periodicities or scroll the horizontal viewing period scrollbar. If you drag and drop an annotation that is date/time dependent, the annotation will become associated with the date/time where you dropped it in the chart window. After completing a drag and drop of an annotation a message in the main toolbar message area will tell you the new date/time of the textual annotation.

Use Setup: Preferences: Charting: Technical Indicators: Annotation to adjust the default settings for adding new annotations via the text tool. If you want your annotations to be fixed within the window rather than pinned to a particular date/time, be sure to mark the checkbox cited above.
  2. Dial/Data Historical data downloading improved
If you make a historical download request for a quote page of instruments, Investor/RT will divide the instruments in the quote page into groups and perform multiple downloads so that each download request asks for no more than 15,000 days of data, the Dial/Data limit.
  3. Backtesting: Consolidated summary report added
When running a backtest on a quote page of instruments, Investor/RT now produces a "one line summary" for each symbol tested. In addition, a consolidated summary report is produced showing the consolidated results of the backtest across all instruments tested.
  4. Fibonacci Indicator improved
The three Fibonacci technical indicators in Investor/RT (Retracements, projections and arcs) have been enhanced to add a user-specified retracement level.
  5. Show/Hide Chart windows pane titles
A new button has been added to the chart toolbar for showing or hiding the window pane titles with the chart window. Click the "Show/Hide Pane Title(s)" button to toggle all pane titles on or off. If you want to toggle the title for only a particular window pane, first select any graph element within the pane by clicking on it. The graph element will become highlighted to indicate visually that it is selected. Then click the "Show/Hide Pane Title" button to toggle the title on or off as desired. If you click the "Show/Hide Pane Title" button while holding down the shift key, Investor/RT will toggle ALL panes regardless of whether an element is selected or not. Another way to toggle a particular pane title is to use the popup menu. Right-click (Mac users just click) in the particular pane you want to adjust and choose "Chart Preferences: Show/Hide Pane Title" from the popup menu.

Chart windows that were saved prior to version 4.1 will have no pane titles displayed when the saved chart is opened in Version 4.1. If you want such charts to show their pane titles, click on the "Show/Hide Pane Title(s)" button or adjust each pane individually, then save the chart. Once a chart is saved under release 4.1 or higher, the chart's pane title display settings will be remembered.
  6. InterQuote Ticker Symbol Limit Increase
InterQuote now offers an optional service level of 600 real-time ticker symbols, double the standard allotment of 300 symbols. Investor/RT 4.1 and higher now recognizes the user's service level when the system connects to InterQuote and allows the expanded number of symbols. For more information or to sign up for the extended symbol limit, visit www.interquote.com.
  7. Internet data feed temporary file deletion
Each of the Internet data services supported by Investor/RT (eSignal, InterQuote, and myTrack) provide data downloading services for daily and intra-day data. Investor/RT creates temporary text files in the admin folder directory when downloading. These files are not deleted after the downloading is completed. The files are useful as an "after the fact" record in diagnosing downloading problems. A new command has been added to the Control menu (Control: Data Management: Delete: Temporary Files) for the purpose of purging all temporary text files from the admin directory. This command may be useful to those running Investor/RT from a RAM disk because it can reduce the size of the Investor/RT folder/directory considerably.
  8. Candlestick Pattern Recognition improvement
Intra-day candlestick pattern recognition is now effective without memory resource problems. In the process of correcting this bug, we discovered a flaw having to do with the pattern recognition logic used by this indicator. The calculation of "average candle body size" for an instrument was yielding a lower than actual true average in some cases. This impacts the overall candle pattern recognition since average body size is an important factor in searching for patterns. This bug has been fixed and the pattern recognition is much more precise than in earlier versions.
  9. Chart drawing tools improved
Chart drawing tools improved. The charting toolbar has been rearranged to better organize the drawing tools. A (horizontal) reference line tool has been added. Both horizontal reference lines and vertical references lines can be dragged to adjust their placement within the pane. Select a horizontal reference line for dragging by clicking anywhere on the line. Select a vertical reference line for dragging by clicking on either end of the line.

The rectangle tool is used to draw rectangles enclosing some period of price activity. To select a rectangle for editing or deletion, click on any corner of the rectangle. Then press the Delete key (forward del key on Macintosh keyboards) to delete the rectangle, or press enter (or return) to edit the selected rectangle.

Trend lines, Fibonacci base trend lines, and regression lines are now more easily selected by clicking anywhere on the line. Note that to select a Fibonacci indicator in a chart you must click on the base trend line, not on one of the Fibonacci retracments or projection lines.
  10. Dial/Data automatic downloading
Users of the Dial/Data Edition of Investor/RT and users of broadcast data services (Signal, BMI, DTN) who also use Dial/Data for historical data will see an improvement in the way chart data downloading operates. If the Automatic Downloading option is turned on in Setup: Preferences: Charting: Other Preferences or if the user clicks the download button in the chart window or in the chart toolbar, Investor/RT will connect directly to Dial/Data and download daily/weekly/monthly data as needed for the chart. There is no longer any need to view or work with the Data Download window to get historical data into a chart. This is essentially, the same way Investor/RT operates with Internet based data feeds (eSignal, InterQuote, myTrack).
  11. Web Resource Access by ticker symbol
Investor/RT 4.1 Rev 1 features improved Internet integration for easy access to a variety of popular Internet sites. Right-click on a ticker symbol in a quote page, portfolio, or instrument selection list and choose Web Info from the popup menu to access web based information on that ticker symbol. Macintosh users hold down the command (apple) key while clicking on the ticker to access the popup menu.
  12. Database (data_f) directory placement option
Investor/RT expects to find the database files in a directory (folder) named data_f. The data_f folder is usually located in the same directory (folder) as the Investor/RT application. Many users, especially on the Macintosh platform, run Investor/RT on a RAM DISK for increased performance. In this past this has required placing the entire Investor/RT directory folder on the RAM DISK.

In Version 4.1 it is now possible to relocate the data_f folder to any location you want. It is no longer a requirement that the data_f folder reside in the same directory folder as the Investor/RT application. To accomplish this, create a text file named "datapath.txt" and place this file in the admin directory folder where the Investor/RT application resides. The datapath.txt file, if present, must contain a valid "path" specification, telling Investor/RT where to find the data_f (database) folder. The "database definition file" named irtdb40.dbd at present, must also be copied to the same location as the data_f folder. The dbd file must exist outside the data_f directory folder at the same level as the data_f.

For example, a Macintosh user with a ram disk volume named RAMDISK can now copy the data_f folder and the irtdb40.dbd file to the RAMDISK volume. Create the datapath.txt file containing a single line of text with the path:

    RAMDISK:

At startup, Investor/RT would note the presence of the datapath.txt file in the admin directory and use the "dbd file" and data_f folder located on the RAMDISK volume instead of the data_f folder on the hard drive.

If no datapath.txt file is found in the admin folder, Investor/RT will expect to find the data_f folder directly in the same folder where the Investor/RT application resides.

The Backup Database, Verify Database, and Database Maintenance commands within the Control: Database Utilities menu will also use the datapath.txt file if present to perform their functions on both Windows and Macintosh platforms.

On the Macintosh platform, the I/RT Database Maintenance and I/RT Database Verify applications, if launched manually from the Investor/RT Folder will also honor the datapath.txt file if present.

On the Windows platform, the Database Maintenance and Verify Database commands in the Windows Start Menu, are configured to expect the data_f directory in its usually location in the investrt directory. Windows users who wish to relocate their data_f folders in this way, should modify the dbmaint.bat and dbverify.bat files in the investrt directory so that the various commands contain the correct path to the database. For example, if a Windows users created a ram disk drive and assigned the ram disk to drive letter F:, then the datapath.txt file should contain the single line:

    F:

The dbmaint.bat file should be edited using notepad, changing the lines:

    dbclrlb irtdb40
    keybuild irtdb40
    dchain irtdb40
    dbcheck -a -c irtdb40 > dbmaint.txt
    notepad dbmaint.txt

    to

    dbclrlb F:irtdb40
    keybuild F:irtdb40
    dchain F:irtdb40
    dbcheck -a -c F:irtdb40 > dbmaint.txt
    notepad dbmaint.txt

This new feature may also be useful to those who may wish to maintain multiple Investor/RT databases. For example, a user may have one data_f database containing end-of-day historical data for thousands of instruments, and a leaner database of a few hundred symbols for intra-day usage with an Internet data service. To switch from one database to another, quit Investor/RT and revise the datapath.txt file to "point" to the alternate directory containing the other database.

The "User Profile" in Investor/RT has been revised to show the current "path" Investor/RT is using to access its database. To view your user profile, choose "Copy User Profile" from the Edit menu and click "Show" in the ensuing dialog box.
  13. Volume/Market Profile improvements
The volume profile chart can now be configured to show the volume profile of daily data over some user specified long term period. Formerly, the volume profile window could only show the profile of intra-day (tick by tick) data.

When a long term volume profile is requested, the user can specify the price point (open, high, low, close, High + Lo/2, or High + Low + Close/3) to use for each day's volume.

The Market Profile chart has been enhanced to clearly outline the opening range (first hour of trading represented by As and Bs).  A last price indicator has also been added to the Market Profile chart to show exactly what price level the instrument is currently trading.
  14. Momentum CD ROM Stock History update
In January 2000, Momentum began publishing their historical stock CD in a revised format. The Momentum CD contains up to 13 years of daily historical data on US Stocks. Investor/RT 4.1 Rev 1 has been updated to recognize the new CD format. For more information on the Momentum CD, visit www.momentumcd.com. Investor/RT users (both Windows and Macintosh) should order the Febrary 2000 or later CD ROM in Metastock format. (do not order the ASCII format CD ROM).
  15. Miscellaneous portfolio enhancements
The data column "Tick Volume" is now available for display in portfolios. For stocks, this column shows the number of shares bought or sold for the most recent trade. The %Change Today data column can now be used to sort the portfolio.
  16. RTL (Investor/RT Real-Time Language) additions
Two news tokens, TIME and NOW have been added to make it possible to include time-of-day tests within scans and trading signals. Nine new trigonometric functions have been added for use in custom indicators, scans, and trading signals.

TIME evaluates to the time of day expressed as a whole number (hhmm). TIME can be used in trading signals that are included in trading systems. During backtesting on intra-day data, TIME will be the time of day of the bar (or tick) being evaluated. For example, the RTL expression:

    TIME > 1530 AND <any RTL expression>

Would be true when the back test time of day is 3:30 pm or later and the rest of the expression is true.

The NOW token serves the same purpose in scans that are run during the trading session (apart from backtesting). For example, the RTL expression:

    (NOW < 1030 AND <RTL expression 1>) OR (NOW > 1500 AND <RTL expression 2>) OR <RTL expression 3>

would scan for <expression1> during the first hour of trading and <expression2> during the last hour of trading or <expression3> otherwise.

    The nine trigonometric functions are:

    SIN sine function
    ASIN arc sine function
    HSIN hyperbolic sine function
    COS cosine function
    ACOS arc cosine function
    HCOS hyperbolic cosine function
    TAN tangent function
    ATAN arc tangent function
    HTAN hyperbolic tangent function

Each of the functions takes a single value or expression as an argument, e.g. SIN(CL - CL5). The function tokens may be entered in all upper or all lower case.
