Investor/RT Answer
Answers to Common Questions

Question

What is a user profile, and why do I have to include it in my emails to support?

Answer

The User Profile is a short paragraph of text containing descriptive information about your Investor/RT setup--what platform and version of the software you are using, your session setups, what time zone you are in, information about the verification and backup status of your database, and more. To see your user profile, click the System Status button on the main toolbar in Investor/RT.

Having this information at hand saves us considerable time and enables us to serve you faster and more effectively. Please include the profile text with every new message you send to support@linnsoft.com, no matter how minor the issue. It’s easy; here’s how:

If you send questions using the built-in email feature of Investor/RT, the profile is included for you. Choose "New E-Mail Message" from the Investor/RT Help menu (or click the Email button on the main toolbar) enter your question and press "Send"; the profile text is appended to your message.

If you use other email software or web mail, there are easy ways to include the profile in your messages:

  1. Choose "Copy User Profile" from the Investor/RT Edit menu to copy the profile text to the clipboard. When composing a new message, issue the "paste" command (Ctrl-V) to place the profile text into your message body.

  2. Use the Attach feature of your email program. When prompted for the file to attach, navigate to the directory/folder where Investor/RT is installed and open the admin directory/folder. Select the file "UserProfile.txt" as your attachment.

When you email support@linnsoft.com to start a dialog on some subject, the initiating email should always contain a current profile. The profile text will be retained in the reply you receive from support. You can reply back and forth easily without including the profile again, so long as you have your email client setup to include the prior text in your replies. If you send email to support without the user profile, it is likely that you will get no answer or a partial answer, along with a request for the profile. Please help us to serve you better by including the profile text with all your emails to us.
