Under both Vista and XP, the Investor/RT program (investrt.exe)
and some related files are installed (typically) into C:\Program
Files\Investrt\ by the installer.
Under XP, the database (data_f) and other user updatable files can and
do reside inside this \Investrt folder inside \Program Files
Under Vista, this is not permitted. Vista programs do not have authority
to revise files located inside the Program Files folder. This is why
Vista provides a user folder wherein permission to update files is
granted. This makes your system more secure, each user only updates
files in his own "user space", while the Program Files folder is
protected against malware.
For compatibility with Vista, Investor/RT creates a folder inside your
user home folder named "InvestorRT" (not investrt, but InvestorRT
spelled out in full). The data_f database folder, admin folder and other
user updatable folders all reside there.
If you are transitioning from XP to Vista and on the Vista machine you
already have this InvestorRT folder setup, the all you have to do is
copy the data_f from the original machine and place it inside the
InvestorRT folder replacing the one that's there now. Then startup I/RT
and all you setups will be there voila.
The InvestorRT folder is located on the path
C:\users\username\InvestorRT\ where username is the name of your
Vista user account.
Note that the investrt resides in C:\Program Files, while the
InvestorRT folder resides within a folder nested inside C:\Users.
All of this work to make I/RT fully compatible with Windows Vista was
done some time ago and was documented in more detail that you may be
interested in knowing. Please see the built-in help topic
Windows Vista Compatibility in What's New version 9.1. We have
been testing the upcoming Windows 7 operating system and the same
techniques I/RT uses for user data retention inside the /users/username
folder apply to Windows 7 as well.
