Investor/RT Registration

Linn Software issues a 20 character registration code to each licensed user of Investor/RT. A registration code must be entered in order to activate the software for a particular data service. Registration is not required to use the Free Demonstration Version.

To Register Please Use This Procedure

The fastest, easiest, and least error prone registration method is the One-Step Method. Registration codes are sent to you by email. Simply open the email message, type Ctrl-A to select the entire text of the mail message, type Ctrl-C to copy the selected text to the clipboard. Then choose "Register..." from the IRT File Menu. All the registration information will be setup automatically by the software. The registration wizard will then guide you through the remainder of the registration process. Macintosh Users: Use the Apple-A, Apple-C for copy and paste instead of Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C. With some email programs, such as MS Outlook, you can right-click in the email message body and choose "Select All", then right-click again and choose "Copy". The File: Register command will then complete the process.

Please do not try to register the software manually by entering information manually into the Registration window. The "Select All", "Copy", File: Register method works every time.

When you register using the One-Step Method, Investor/RT creates a text file of the registration text using the current date in the file name in the form "License_YYYYMMDD.txt". The text file will be saved in the admin directory/folder inside the Investor/RT startup folder. These license text files are not required by Investor/RT to operate; they are saved for your convenience if you wish to refer to any of your registration setups in the future. You may delete these files at any time.

We recommend that you use this simple copy/paste method. The File: Register command examines the clipboard text and verifies that the registration setup you are attempting to use is compatible with the platform (Windows, Macintosh OS X, Classic Macintosh) you are using. If the registration code is for a data service other than the one in use, Investor/RT will ask if you wish to reconfigure the software for that data service. If you click OK, the reconfiguration and registration process for the new data service will be completed automatically.

Some Investor/RT users receive email on a computer other than the one on which Investor/RT is running. If your computers are networked you can easily save the registration email message as a text file and make that file accessible to the machine running Investor/RT. You can then use the one-step method.

If you enjoy the challege of entering arcane 20 character codes by hand, follow the instructions below to register manually. It is an error prone process. If you experience any difficulty registering the software, always try the one-step method before requesting assistance.

Manual Registration

Registration may be accomplished manually by following these steps:

1. Choose Setup: Preferences. Registration
2. In the appropriate entry boxes, enter the User Name, the Receiver or Login ID, the Dial/Data User ID (enter NA if not applicable), and the Registration Code. Each item must be entered precisely, including spaces and punctuation characters, in order for the registration to be accepted.
3. Enter your email address.
4. (Optional Step) If the outgoing mail server is unspecified, click Setup and enter it in the Mail and Internet Setup window. Entering the outgoing mail server will enable you to send email messages and email alerts from Investor/RT.
5. Click the OK button.

If any of the four items entered in step 2 above are correct, a notice will appear stating that the registration was unsuccessful and why. If registration is unsuccessful and you have not already tried the recommend one-step method, then do so before proceeding.

To review the Investor/RT License Agreement, click here.

When using the manual registration procedure, the four items of information must be entered precisely. Here are some further guidelines for entering each of the four items.

User Name Please type in the user name precisely as it is shown in the registration e-mail message you received. Each letter, space, and punctuation character must match exactly or you will receive a message "Invalid user name or receiver id".

20 character Registration code Enter the registration code in blocks of four characters just as it is shown in the email message. If you received your registration code by email, you can use cut and paste to transfer the registration code from your e-mail message into the data entry box. When you type in the registration code manually, Investor/RT will supply the hyphens after each block of four characters. Each letter will be capitalized automatically. Note that Investor/RT registration codes will never contain the letter I (eye) or the letter O (oh) or the number 0 (zero) with the exception of the last 4 characters which are typically four zeros (not oh's). The code will be composed of alphabetic letters, the dollar sign character, and the digits 1 throught 9. A very common mistake when entering the registration code is to type in the letter I (eye) or the letter L (el) instead of the number 1. If you use copy paste to insert your registration code you will avoid these common errors.

Data Receiver ID or Login id. For DTN Satellite users, this number identifies the specific data receiver. For DTN.IQ,, myTrack and Quote.com users, the id specifies your login id. eSignal refers to this as your user name. For IB users, it is the universal account number (U number) optionally followed by a DTN Market Access ID. If you are using the end-of-day or non-streaming edition of Investor/RT, this field should read "NA" since no continuous streaming data feed is involved.

DTN The DTN "TID" number is displayed on page 3, DTN statistics on the Spectrum (D7000) display monitor or on the LCD display panel of model D8000 DTN receivers. When entering the TID, do not type the hyphen, just the 8 characters of the TID. DTN TID numbers are composed of the digits 0 thru 9 and the letters A thru F, e.g. FC00D158. DTN D7000 receivers typically begin with the characters "FF00", while the D8000 units begin with "FC00"

DTN.IQ Enter your DTN.IQ login id. DTN.IQ login ids are typically six digit numbers.

eSignal Enter the eSignal user name if applicable.

Dial/Data User ID
All Investor/RT Dial/Data user ids are composed of the letter N followed by 5 digits. An "NA" appears in this box by default. If you have an account with Dial/Data, input your user id in place of "NA". If not, leave "NA" in the edit box. If you have a Dial/Data user id with a different first letter that you acquired for use with some other software product, contact Dial/Data to have your user id number changed to an "N" number for use with Investor/RT.

If you open a Dial/Data account at a later date, send an e-mail message to info@linnsoft.com to request a new 20-character registration code. Be sure to provide your new Dial/Data user id in the message along with your receiver id.

Once you have completed the four boxes, click on the "OK" button. The message "OK (followed by the expiration date)" will indicate a successful registration. After successful registration a window will appear asking if you accept the terms of the license agreement.and guiding you through the rest of the registration process.

If registration is unsuccessful, a message explaining the reason for the failure will appear in the Registration window, next to the title "Status:". There are three possible error messages:

1. Invalid Registration Code: This means that the 20-character registration code itself has been entered incorrectly. Perhaps the letter "L" was mistakenly entered as the number 1, or something similar. Erase the registration code and re-enter it carefully. Better yet, use the One Step Registration method described at the top of this help topic.

2. Invalid name or user id: This means that a mistake was made when entering either the user name or the receiver id or login id. The 20-character registration code itself has been entered correctly. Erase the user and receiver id fields and enter them again carefully letter for letter. All letters, spaces, and punctuation must exactly match the user name and receiver id entered in the e-mail message.

3. Registration Code Expired: This means that the expiration date of the registration code you have entered has passed. Check your computer's clock to make sure the correct month, day, and year are set.

If you are unable to register the software successfully, send an e-mail to support@linnsoft.com requesting assistance with registration. Include in the message your name and telephone number, the 20 character registration code you have entered, the user name, receiver id/login id, and Dial/Data user id entered. Copy this information using copy and paste it into the e-mail message.
