Answers to Common Questions

Question

I use Interactive Brokers or Infinity/TransAct or Zen-Fire with the DTN Market Access (DTNMA) for backfill.  Do I need DTNMA and how do I setup my symbols to properly backfill from DTNMA?

Answer

This video on setting up symbols for IB will be especially useful for Interactive Brokers users.
This video on setting up symbols for Zen will be especially useful for Zen-Fire users.
There is also a general video on setting up symbols that covers DTNMA setup.

How do I turn on DTNMA?  DTNMA can be turned on instantly.  From within Investor/RT, go to "File: License Activation" and click on the "Revise License" button.  Check the "DTN Market Access" checkbox and then click the "Submit" button.

Investor/RT users who use a brokerage feed to supply data to IRT have sometimes found that the backfill provided from their brokerage feed is unreliable, incomplete, or insufficient.  These feeds include Interactive Brokers, TransAct/Infinity, and Rithmic/Zenfire.  Regardless of the reason, these users have a fast, reliable, and comprehensive backfill alternative with DTN Market Access Historical Service (DTN MA).  When your license includes DTN MA, all backfill requests will be routed by default to DTN historical servers. The cost of this optional service is $15/month; you may add or remove the service from your license at any time.  Go to "File: License Activation" and choose "Revise License". Check the "DTN Market Access" checkbox in the ensuing window and click "Submit".

Each symbol has a "downloading alias" symbol which dictates the symbol used when requesting backfill data from DTNMA.  DTNMA does not use the same symbol format as IB or TransAct/Infinity.

There are a couple ways to setup this alias.  You can do so in the setup instruments window.  To bring up the setup instruments window, choose "Setup: Instruments" from the main menu (or hit alt-a on keyboard).  Type in the symbol of interest in the "Symbol:" box.  At the bottom of this window, you should see a "Alias Symbols... Downloading:"  (Note:  if you don't see this, click the "Show Advanced" button at the lower left of the window to expand the window.).  Enter the proper DTNMA symbol for the contract.  In the window below, the DTN symbol @ES# was entered as the alias for ESZ8.  The DTN symbols for various contracts can be found in the DTN IQFeed/DTNMA column of the symbols page.  If you don't find your symbol there, check the DTN IQFeed Symbol Guide.

Users may also add the "Alias Ticker" column to any quotepage, to both view and/or edit the alias DTNMA ticker of any symbol.  This allows you to view the aliases of many symbol at once.  To add this column, simply right-click in a column title of any quotepage column and choose "add column".  Then choose "Alias Ticker" from the list and click "OK".  The column should appear in the quotepage.

Here is a good video comparing the snapshot quotes of IB to those of DTNMA or DTN IQFeed:
