Prospective New User FAQ's

The Subscription level you need will be based on the style of analysis your trading strategies use (Volume Profile, TPO Profile, Volume Analysis, etc). If you were referred to us by a trading educator, find out what Subscription level they recommend based on the tools they use for analysis. Use the pricing table to compare features and pricing.

Linn Software, the developer of Investor/RT, is not a market data provider. We partner with vendors of subscription real-time data services and with brokers who provide streaming market data to their brokerage clients. For historical market data, Linn Software offers subscriptions to DTN Market Access Historical Service (DTN MA). DTN MA can be used as a standalone source of historical data for after-market analysis and backtesting. DTN MA is strongly recommended for Investor/RT clients who elect to receive real-time data from a broker data source. In this context, DTN MA is used by Investor/RT to automatically backfill the historical data for each symbol upon connection to the real-time source. For more information see the DTN MA section below.

For your Information

Approximately 90% of our brokerage feed clients use DTN MA for backfill, a good indication of its value.

What is DTNMA?
DTN MA is a historical data service hosted by DTN and marketed by Linn Software to Investor/RT users.
Why would I need it?
Users that feed Investor/RT using brokerage account usually find that the historical data coverage provided by their broker is unreliable, incomplete, or insufficient. Here is an example.
What does it cost?
The cost is $15/month. The feature can be enabled at any time by logging into your account on this website.
How does it work?
You will always use your brokers symbols for real time data but when your license includes DTN MA, you simply open the Instrument Set-up Window for each symbol by pressing Alt-A. Then add the DTN symbol at the bottom into the field labeled DTN Symbol. After that, all historical back fill requests are routed to DTN historical servers and your real time tick data continues to come from your broker.

Where can I find DTN Symbols?
You can view a list of the most often traded symbols using our Symbol Guide. For a more exhaustive list of symbols, visit visit the IQFeed website.

New Users that do not have a real time source of data, but would still like to try Investor/RT, can do so using a Demo ticker symbol ($DEMO) that is built into Investor/RT. Simply Download Investor/RT and open a new chart using the ticker symbol $DEMO. Please note that this data is random data that is streaming from our servers and does not actually represent an Instrument or real ticks. Certain Indicators and Periodicities rely on real tick data with volume for each trade to operate. Therefore, if you're analysis requires tick data, and you would like to test drive Investor/RT with real tick data, you can either get a trial from a supported data source listed above, or you can request a 14 day free trial from us and just elect to have DTN Market Access Historical data service as part of your trial when you sign up. Although DTNMA is not a real time feed, it will provide a reliable source of data that you can download and use for testing.

Investor/RT has a very small footprint compared to most other trading platforms. It can run on any modern Windows 7 or Windows 10 machine with atleast 4GB of RAM but atleast 8GB is preferred. We recommend Windows 10 since that is the operating system that our development staff uses when building and testing. We do not suggest Windows 8 and we no longer support Windows XP.
