Getting Started - Trading Automation Overview

For new users of Investor/RT here are some key terms and object types that underlie the trading and trading automation features of the platform.

The term Trading Strategy refers to an automated order management strategy. A Trading Strategy in the Investor/RT context is a strategy for managing the OCO stop and target brackets for one, two, or three legs of overall position.

We use the term Trading Signal (or Signal) to refer to a true/false expression in RTL. A signal, is a user-defined and user-named object, written in the RTL language, that can be charted using the Signal Marker Indicator, for example.

A Signal Marker Indicator can be setup to produce an alert by executing a named Signal Action when the underlying signal fires true in real-time.

A signal action is a user defined and user-named object that can perform myriad tasks, including the submission of a trading order.

A trading order is a user-defined and user-named object that describes what is to be sent to the broker, e.g. BUY 3 Market. A trading order can optionally have an attached Trading Strategy that specifies how the broker is to manage the stops and targets for the position once filled.

A trading system is a user-defined and user-named object; it is a collection of trading rules.

A trading rule does not have a name, but it refers to a named trading signal and it specifies what action, if any, should be taken when the rule is true, e.g. buy 1, or sell 3.

A trading system can be back tested to produce reports on the performance of the collection of rules.

A trading system can be added to a chart via the Trading System Indicator. When running inside a chart (as opposed to back testing),  each rules can refer to a signal action to be executed when the rule's signal fires true in real-time
